Swansea University investigates the consequences of gaming on RAF well-being.

The study, which included almost 2,000 serving members of the RAF, discovered that 2% of current troops are affected by problem gambling. The study also investigated how alcoholism and mental health influence RAF recruits, as well as whether one or both disorders are connected to gambling addiction.

According to the report, RAF personnel are more vulnerable to gambling harm than the typical citizen.

"This internationally significant, large-scale study shows, for the first time, that serving members of the RAF are vulnerable to gambling-related harm," said Simon Dymond, Professor of Psychology at Swansea University.

"It is important that we follow up this finding with targeted help and support, including the early identification of potential harms that arise from gambling among currently serving personnel from all services."

The study, undertaken by Professor Dymond's colleague Dr Amy Pritchard, also reveals that 13.7% of RAF personnel are at risk of acquiring signs of gambling damage. It was also said that retired veterans are "significantly more likely to experience problem gambling."

In comparison to other criteria included in the study, individuals with an alcohol issue were twice as likely to succumb to gambling damage, while those with severe depression were five times as likely.

"We are committed to providing appropriate support to the serving RAF community, and this research will help inform our emotional wellbeing services moving forward," said Chris Elliot, Controller of the RAF Benevolent Fund.

The RAF Benevolent Fund has pledged to change the situation and has made many crucial suggestions. These include raising employee awareness, screening individuals with a high risk of developing difficulties, training for health professionals and line managers, and giving coping skills for those at risk of developing problems.
